What Drove the Results
Adjusted EPS of $2.56 beat the $2.48 consensus by $0.08, but operating income fell more than twice as fast as net premiums earned, 19.7% versus 8.1%, a divergence driven primarily by catastrophic loss activity concentrated in the insurance segment. The insurance segment's combined ratio deteriorated 5.1 percentage points to 98.5%, with current accident year catastrophic events consuming 8.0 points of earned premium compared to 2.9 points in Q2 2025. Insurance underwriting income collapsed from $129 million to $27 million, a 79.1% decline year over year.
The insurance underwriting expense ratio also widened to 35.5% from 33.6%, reflecting transitional costs associated with the August 2024 acquisition of Allianz's U.S. MidCorp and Entertainment insurance businesses and a lower net premiums earned base. Adjusting for the non-renewal of certain programs related to that acquisition, net premiums written in the insurance segment would have declined only 1.8% rather than the reported 5.1%. The reinsurance segment was more stable, with underwriting income declining 9.1% to $410 million and a combined ratio of 77.5%, an improvement of 1.0 percentage point from 78.5% in Q2 2025.
GAAP net income of $1,047 million ($3.00 per share) exceeded adjusted net income of $893 million ($2.56 per share) for the quarter, with the gap primarily attributable to equity method investment income of $196 million and net realized gains, items excluded from the adjusted measure.
Wall Street View
Arch Capital CEO Nicolas Papadopoulo characterized the quarter as reflecting the strength of the company's diversified platform and disciplined execution, noting its leadership in Specialty Insurance, Mortgage, and Reinsurance operations. Analyst consensus heading into the report stood at a majority buy-leaning stance, and the adjusted EPS beat provides a degree of support for that view, though the insurance segment's margin deterioration is the metric most likely to draw scrutiny. Shares gained 2.50% on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, while the S&P 500 rose 0.24%.
Investor Takeaway
The headline EPS beat is real, but the insurance segment's combined ratio of 98.5% effectively means that unit generated almost no underwriting profit in the quarter, a structural concern if catastrophe frequency remains elevated into the second half of 2026. The $1.2 billion in share repurchases and a 2.8% sequential increase in book value per share to $68.04 indicate management's confidence in capital adequacy, which may limit downside for long-term holders even as near-term underwriting results remain pressured by loss activity.
