CMS Energy's Q2 adjusted EPS of $0.37 matched the $0.36 estimate, but a 45% collapse in Other income drove pre-tax income down nearly 50% year over year.
CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS) reported second-quarter 2026 results on Tuesday, July 28, with GAAP EPS of $0.37 matching the prior adjusted EPS consensus estimate of $0.36, while revenue of $1.83 billion slipped 0.5% year over year. Beneath the headline numbers, operating income fell 16.7% and pre-tax income dropped 49.4% compared to Q2 2025, driven by a sharp decline in Other income and higher interest charges.
Q2 2026 Results
- Revenue: $1,829M, down from $1,838M in Q2 2025, a decline of 0.5% year over year
- GAAP EPS: $0.37, compared to $0.66 in Q2 2025, a decline of 43.9% year over year; adjusted EPS also $0.37, versus $0.71 in Q2 2025
- Operating income: $264M, down from $317M in Q2 2025, a decline of 16.7% year over year; GAAP operating margin contracted 2.8 percentage points to 14.4%
- Pre-tax income: $129M, down from $255M in Q2 2025, with pre-tax margin falling 6.8 percentage points to 7.1%
- Six-month GAAP EPS: $1.47, compared to $1.67 for the same period in 2025; six-month adjusted EPS of $1.50 versus $1.73 a year earlier
What Drove the Results
Revenue was nearly flat at -0.5%, but operating expenses grew to $1,565M from $1,521M (+$44M, +2.9% year over year), compressing operating income by $53M. The steeper drop in pre-tax income reflects two additional pressures: Other income fell sharply to $75M from $137M in Q2 2025, a decline of $62M or 45.3%, and interest charges rose to $210M from $199M, an increase of $5.5% year over year. Loss attributable to noncontrolling interests also widened to $24M from $8M a year earlier.
On an adjusted basis, the Q2 2026 figure of $0.37 per share represented a 1.6% positive surprise against the $0.36 consensus estimate. The gap between GAAP and adjusted EPS was minimal this quarter, with reconciling items including enterprise resource planning software implementation costs and mark-to-market adjustments related to NorthStar Clean Energy's interest expense totaling roughly $0.01 per share before tax effects.
NorthStar Restructuring and Guidance
CMS Energy also disclosed a strategic decision on its NorthStar Clean Energy segment, announcing it is exiting non-utility renewables development. The company will retain Michigan-based assets, including Dearborn Industrial Generation (DIG), and exit all other non-utility renewables projects. The company stated this restructuring is intended to simplify its business, reduce financing needs, and sharpen focus on regulated energy services.
For full-year 2026, CMS reaffirmed its adjusted EPS guidance of $3.83 to $3.90. The company also introduced 2027 adjusted EPS guidance of $4.08 to $4.17, and reiterated its long-term adjusted EPS growth target of 6% to 8%, expressing continued confidence toward the high end of that range. Operating cash flow for the first six months of 2026 was $1,327M, compared to $1,414M in the same period of 2025.
Wall Street View
Analyst sentiment on CMS heading into the print was broadly constructive, with the majority of active coverage carrying Buy or equivalent ratings. The reaffirmed 2026 guidance and new 2027 target range of $4.08 to $4.17 provide a concrete earnings floor for analysts recalibrating models following the NorthStar restructuring announcement.
Investor Takeaway
The divergence between CMS Energy's nearly flat revenue and its sharply lower pre-tax income highlights that cost pressures and the decline in Other income, rather than top-line weakness, were the central earnings story this quarter. The NorthStar exit removes a source of earnings volatility tied to non-utility renewables, and the 2027 guidance introduction implies roughly 5% to 7% adjusted EPS growth from the midpoint of the 2026 range, consistent with the company's stated long-term growth corridor. Shares traded at $76.13 on Tuesday, July 28, a gain of 2.50%, while the S&P 500 lost 0.33%.
