Google Cloud revenue jumped 82% to $24.8B and operating margin hit 34%, but $44.9B in capex pushed free cash flow to -$5.86B this quarter.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) reported second-quarter 2026 financial results on July 22. Consolidated revenue rose 24% year-over-year to $119.8 billion, marking 12 consecutive quarters of double-digit top-line growth. Operating performance was driven by Google Cloud, which recorded revenue of $24.8 billion, up 82% from Q2 2025. However, capital requirements increased significantly, with quarterly capital expenditures exceeding operating cash flow and pushing free cash flow into negative territory.

Q2 2026 Results

  • Total revenue: $119.8 billion, up 24% year-over-year (23% in constant currency)
  • Google Cloud: Revenue of $24.8 billion, up 82% year-over-year; segment operating income was $8.8 billion, compared to $2.8 billion in Q2 2025
  • Google Services: Revenue of $94.5 billion, up 15% year-over-year. Search and other reached $63.3 billion (+17%), YouTube advertising reached $11.1 billion (+13%), and subscriptions, platforms, and devices reached $12.9 billion (+15%)
  • Operating income: $40.8 billion, up 30% year-over-year; operating margin expanded 200 basis points to 34%
  • GAAP diluted EPS: $9.11, compared to $2.31 in Q2 2025, a figure that includes $98.0 billion in non-operating other income, primarily unrealized gains on equity securities
  • Capital expenditures and cash flow: Operating cash flow was $39.1 billion; capital expenditures reached $44.9 billion, resulting in free cash flow of negative $5.86 billion

What Drove the Results

Google Cloud revenue growth accelerated to 82% year-over-year, supported by enterprise adoption of Google Cloud Platform infrastructure and Gemini Enterprise models. Google Services maintained steady top-line growth at 15%, led by core Search performance.

Reported GAAP net income and EPS were significantly elevated due to $98.0 billion in non-operating gains on equity investments. Stripping out these paper gains, core operating profit stood at $40.8 billion, supported by operational leverage in Cloud and cost discipline across core services.

To support computing demands, management raised full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $195-$205 billion, up from $180-$190 billion previously. Capital allocation reflected this commitment: during the quarter, Alphabet raised $49.6 billion in net proceeds from equity and mandatory convertible preferred stock issuances, alongside $20.3 billion in debt. The board declared a common stock dividend of $0.22 per share and a preferred dividend of $12.15 per share on Series A and B preferred stock.

Wall Street View

Alphabet shares declined 1.5% in post-market trading as markets digested the cash flow implications of the spending update. Although top-line revenue and Cloud operating margins exceeded consensus estimates, investor concern centered on capital intensity. The market response indicates that near-term focus has shifted from top-line beats to return on invested capital timelines, given that full-year capital expenditure guidance now absorbs a substantial portion of operating cash flow.

Investor Takeaway

Google Cloud has scaled into a higher-margin contributor, generating $8.8 billion in quarterly operating income. However, the cash flow dynamics have fundamentally altered. Running a negative free cash flow balance of $5.86 billion in a quarter with $40.8 billion in operating profit shows that hardware and data center requirements are currently outstripping internal cash generation. The core risk factor for equity holders is whether Cloud revenue conversion and margin expansion can accelerate quickly enough to prevent multi-year ROIC compression as depreciation costs flow through the income statement.
