Adjusted EPS of $1.38 beat the $1.30 consensus, yet non-GAAP operating margin fell 248bps to 17.4% as revenue growth outpaced transaction margin expansion.

PayPal Holdings (NASDAQ: PYPL) reported Q2 2026 adjusted EPS of $1.38, beating the $1.30 consensus estimate by 5.9%, while net revenues rose 4.8% year over year to $8.68 billion. The headline beat, however, was offset by meaningful margin compression: both GAAP and non-GAAP operating income declined, even as total payment volume climbed 10% to $486.4 billion. Shares gained 3.57% on Tuesday, July 28, while the S&P 500 fell 0.33%.

Q2 2026 Results

  • Revenue: $8.68 billion, up 4.8% year over year (3% on a currency-neutral basis), versus $8.29 billion in Q2 2025.
  • Adjusted EPS: $1.38, down 1.4% from $1.40 in Q2 2025, beating the $1.30 consensus; GAAP EPS was $1.25, down 3.1% from $1.29.
  • Total payment volume: $486.4 billion, up 10% year over year; payment transactions increased 8% to 6.8 billion.
  • Active accounts: 439 million, up 0.3% year over year; payment transactions per active account rose 3% to 60.0 on a trailing twelve-month basis.
  • Free cash flow: $1.775 billion, up 157% from $692 million in Q2 2025; operating cash flow was $1.98 billion.

What Drove the Results

Adjusted EPS of $1.38 beat the $1.30 consensus by 5.9%, and GAAP EPS of $1.25 compared to $1.29 in the prior-year period. Revenue of $8.68 billion grew 4.8% year over year, with no revenue consensus available for direct comparison.

The central divergence in the quarter was between revenue growth and operating profitability. Transaction margin dollars, a key profitability gauge, grew only 1% to $3.9 billion, well below the 4.8% revenue growth rate. Excluding interest on customer balances, transaction margin dollars rose 3% to $3.62 billion. This gap drove GAAP operating margin down 171 basis points to 16.4% and non-GAAP operating margin down 248 basis points to 17.4%, with GAAP operating income falling 5.1% to $1.43 billion and non-GAAP operating income falling 8.3% to $1.51 billion.

GAAP net income declined 12.5% to $1.10 billion, a steeper drop than the 1.4% fall in adjusted EPS, partly reflecting a roughly $0.07 per-share negative impact from PayPal's strategic investment portfolio and crypto assets held for investment in Q2 2026, compared to a roughly $0.01 positive impact in Q2 2025.

Guidance

PayPal raised its full-year non-GAAP EPS guidance to approximately $5.38, an increase from prior guidance that called for a low-single digit decline to slightly positive result versus the $5.31 reported in 2025. Full-year GAAP EPS guidance was reaffirmed at a mid-single digit decline versus $5.41 in 2025. For Q3 2026, the company guided to a low-single digit decline in both GAAP EPS (versus $1.30) and non-GAAP EPS (versus $1.34). CEO Enrique Lores cited progress in branded checkout stabilization and growth in Venmo and Braintree as underpinning the raised outlook.

Wall Street View

Analyst consensus heading into the print leaned toward Hold, with 11 Buy ratings and 32 Hold ratings among covering firms as of July 1, 2026. The guidance raise to approximately $5.38 in full-year non-GAAP EPS provides a concrete upward revision that may prompt target adjustments, though the degree of margin compression at the operating level is likely to remain a focus in subsequent analyst commentary.

Investor Takeaway

PayPal's Q2 beat on adjusted EPS and the full-year non-GAAP EPS guidance raise to approximately $5.38 confirm execution progress, but the 248-basis-point non-GAAP operating margin contraction indicates that cost growth is currently outpacing revenue expansion, a dynamic investors will need to monitor as the company pursues its stated transformation. The 157% year-over-year improvement in free cash flow to $1.775 billion, alongside $1.5 billion returned to shareholders via share repurchases in the quarter alone, provides a meaningful offset and suggests capital allocation discipline even as profitability margins face near-term pressure.
